Looking back at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019

Image
A few weeks ago, you read our article predicting a big change in women’s sports. Not going to say we told you so, but almost…  Now that the dust has settled, we thought it would be a good idea to take a look back at a month of top-class international soccer, by breaking down the good, the bad and the awesome from this undeniably memorable Women's World Cup.  Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire/Getty Images More than a game, a fight for equality It has been impossible to ignore the United States Women’s National Team (aka USWNT) throughout the entire 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup . We all remember US co-captain Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle securing the win in front of a sold-out crowd of 57,900 people filling the Stade de Lyon. Fans were chanting for equal pay when FIFA president Gianni Infantino and French president Emmanuel Macron were on stage handing out gold medals to the US players. When most teams would have soaked up the praise and celebrated winning the b...

The Holiday season: the best time for sports?

Image
Source: Pragma Magazine It’s December 26th, you’re relaxing at home, doing your best to digest last night’s Christmas feast. You’re in the mood for something entertaining, and as a sports lover, you turn on the TV, because you know something is on, something like the British Boxing Day tradition of a full day of Premier League games, starting from noon. What is Boxing Day? A quick answer from BBC : “ Boxing Day got its name when Queen Victoria was on the throne in the 1800s and has nothing to do with the sport of boxing. The name comes from a time when the rich used to box up gifts to give to the poor. Boxing Day was traditionally a day off for servants, and the day when they received a special Christmas box from their masters. ” But it doesn’t really matter how it got its name, because one thing is for certain, it’s good for the entertainment business. Black Friday versus Singles’ Day!

Image
Valentine’s Day, Easter, Christmas, Halloween, these celebrations create sales peaks around the world. Naively, we might say these peaks are simply due to the celebrations themselves, but let’s face it; there is a well-developed marketing strategy behind each and every one, and we are not just saying this because we are a marketing consultancy firm. Little known in Europe until a few years ago, Black Friday has been huge in the United States for decades. The famous day falls the Friday after Thanksgiving, when North Americans are on vacation and have time to shop, and when the Christmas season officially launches. The real motivation for Black Friday was to counter typically slow sales at that time of year, causing business owners and companies to reduce prices to boost sales. With Halloween, Valentine’s Day and many others, Americans were way ahead of Europe and Asia when it came to capitalizing on these commercial booms. And by a long shot, predating the creation of ...

Retail or not retail – that is the question!

Image
Every sector has its own cycle, and it seems that retail is in the thick of a massive renewal at the moment. The economic crisis in 2008 impacted every industry, requiring them to rethink their strategy, some faster than others. In this article, we will focus on luxury businesses, as they are one of our areas of expertise at The Consultancy Group. Up in the air  Business aviation was impacted immediately by the 2008 crisis, with a dramatic decrease in chartered flights and the purchase of planes, both new and pre-owned. As we saw in a previous article on this blog, travelling reduced dramatically as a first step in cutting costs, business aviation included. The retail market for pre-owned jets became saturated and the market for new jet orders was severely limited. At its best, the leading manufacturers, such as Bombardier, Dassault or Cessna, went from building over 140 business aircraft per year to 35, according to a recent interview of Stefano Albinati , CEO and...

Federer and the golden nugget: the value of athletic sponsorship

Image
Source: Rolex / John Buckle (2018) Is there such thing as the perfect athlete sponsorship contract for a brand? No, but a couple of great deals have been made in the last 50 years, with huge impact for both brand and athlete: Jack Nicklaus, Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, Kobe Bryant and David Beckham are just a few that come to mind. There is one athlete in particular who is taking the lead by far in my opinion. He has ruled tennis the world over for the last two decades. He is none other than Roger Federer. I will not dare to present the prestigious list of trophies that "King Roger" has won, although I would wager that he goes down as one of the greatest sportsmen in history. Over his 20-year career, Roger Federer has been a brand ambassador for some of the world’s most famous names: Rolex, Credit Suisse, Nike. His recent move from Nike to Uniqlo – a reported deal of U$S 300M over ten years – has shaken the world of athletic sponsorship. Source: Forbes (20...
